Catalyst-Free / Straight Type
The catalyst is located immediately downstream of the turbocharger. When engine tuning is performed to increase power or for motorsports applications, the area from the combustion chamber to the catalyst becomes subject to high temperatures and pressure, which places a heavy load on the engine and may cause the catalyst to melt.
Replacing the downpipe with a catalytic converter-less straight type reduces exhaust backpressure and temperature, thereby lowering the load on the engine. Depending on the tuning or application, this becomes increasingly necessary for engine protection.
Lowering the exhaust backpressure after the turbo improves exhaust flow, which also contributes to increased power.
